Apostille

What is an Apostille

An apostille is a specialized certificate issued by a designated authority, often the Secretary of State, that confirms the authenticity of public documents. Basically, it is the cover placed on the document(s) allowing them to be used in a foreign country. It certifies that the notary who signed the document is in good standing and the notary’s commission is current, certifying that the document is genuine, allowing it to be recognized and accepted in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Why is an Apostille Needed?

An apostille is required when presenting public documents abroad to establish their validity. It eliminates the need for further verification or certification in the destination country, saving time, effort, and potential complications. Documents commonly requiring an apostille include birth certificates, marriage licenses, educational transcripts, adoption papers, and powers of attorney.

Documents that might need to be Apostille include adoption documents, background checks (FBI, Local, State), copy of U.S. Passport or U.S. driver's license, diplomas, divorce decree, marriage license, transcripts, single status affidavit, travel consent letters, and transcripts.

Events that often require Apostille services include adoptions, background checks, destination weddings, job transfers, proof of birth or death, teaching abroad, and verification of identity.
